NDAA Unveils Eye-Opening National Prosecutor Retention Survey Findings

--

The National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) has released groundbreaking findings from the 2024 National Prosecutor Retention Survey (NPRS), shedding light on the critical challenges faced by prosecutors nationwide. This eye-opening survey reveals that while an overwhelming 93% of prosecutors enjoy their work, a significant number are considering leaving the profession due to factors such as personal well-being, inadequate pay, and heavy caseloads.

Key Findings from the National Prosecutor Retention Survey:

  • 93% of prosecutors report high job satisfaction.
  • 67% are driven by their commitment to serving their community.
  • 57% have considered leaving the profession, citing personal well-being, better pay, and overwhelming caseloads as the primary reasons.

These findings underscore the urgent need for systemic changes to support and retain our dedicated prosecutors. Recognizing the importance of these challenges, the NDAA is proud to introduce the new Prosecutor Recruitment and Retention Resource Hub. This comprehensive resource hub consolidates various tools and information to aid prosecutorial offices in their recruitment and retention efforts.

New Recruitment & Retention Resource Hub:

  • Resources and Materials: Access comprehensive guides and best practices tailored to enhance recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Job Fair Information: Find details about NDAA’s 2025 Job Fair, offering prime opportunities for networking and career advancement.
  • Survey Findings and Reports: Dive into the full NPRS report and related documents for an in-depth understanding of the issues at hand.

Joe Dallaire, District Attorney of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Chair of NDAA’s Recruitment and Retention Committee, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, “The National Prosecutor Retention Survey underscores the urgent need for action to support our dedicated prosecutors. Addressing these challenges is essential for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of our justice system.”

NDAA Executive Director Nelson Bunn echoed this sentiment, adding, “We are committed to supporting our members by providing the tools and resources they need to overcome these challenges and continue serving their communities with dedication and excellence.”

Call to Action

The NDAA urges prosecutors, policymakers, and law schools to engage with the survey findings and utilize the resources available through the new hub. By addressing the issues identified in the survey, stakeholders can work together to create a more sustainable and effective prosecutorial system.
